FOL SPONSORED PROGRAMS

LIBRARY OUTREACH PROGRAMS: Not every resident can frequent the library. FOL has two outreach programs that bring the library to the community. One is Library at the Laundromat. This program brings adult, teen, juvenile, and children's books to an area laundromat. These books are circulated on a monthly basis. The second and newest program is the Little Free Library. We have our first Little Library at Kaler's Pond and we hope to place more stands throughout the neighborhood

1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN: The program goal is to read 1000 books before your child starts kindergarten. Prizes are sponsored in part by FOL to those who reach this goal.

BOOKS FOR VETS: FOL provides books to the VETS in Riverhead with the help of Commander Lou Baer, VFW Post 414, Center Moriches. He requests books when the shelves are ready and delivers them to their facility quickly and efficiently. As long as there is a need, we will supply the books.

TEEN MOVIE/PIZZA NIGHT: The Young Adult Department offers teens a chance to view a popular film and socialize while they enjoy pizza and popcorn supplied courtesy of FOL. See the Library's current newsletter for date and monthly movie title.

KNITTING CIRCLE: This informal library program takes place on the first Monday of each month at 6pm. Knitters and crocheters of all levels come together to work on their creations, socialize and just have fun. Refreshments are supplied courtesy of FOL.

POETRY & PROSE ROUNDTABLE: Come and join this informal gathering for anyone interested in writing or listening to poetry, first Saturday of the every month, 12:30 pm-2:00 pm. All are welcome!

MONDAY AFTERNOON AT THE LIBRARY: FOL sponsors games in the library's Community Room each Monday, 1:30 pm until 4:30pm. Enjoy a friendly game of Mah Jongg, Scrabble, cards and other table-top games along with great conversation.

LANDSCAPING: FOL plants and maintains the various plants and flowers in the library's west garden. Helping hands are always welcome for Spring and Fall cleanup.

SPECIAL EVENTS

MARCH 2019 FOOD DRIVE

The FOL Share What You Can Food Drive was a great success. Thanks to the many donations during March, 20 filled bags of canned and non-perishable food items were delivered to four food pantries throughout the area. It was so needed and so appreciated! We pass along their heartfelt thanks and ours to you all for your generosity!! And please remember the pantries throughout the year even when food drives are over.

WHAT HAPPENED IN 2018...

  • The 2018 three-day Book Sale was a huge success. For more info on this event, go to the Book Sales/Thrift Shelves page.

  • Library sponsored SHREDDING DAY on September 22, 2018, which was in conjunction with Patron Appreciation Weekend, turned out to be a beautifully sunny and quite productive day. A Shred Away Inc. arrived promptly and proceeded to, well, shred away. The community also donated non-perishable food or toiletry items and cash donations which were used to purchase King Kullen gift cards. In the end, approximately 1,500 pounds of paper was shredded, and 13 boxes of donated items and $200 in King Kullen gift cards were delivered to local pantries. Awesome!

  • FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY WEEK, October 21 to October27, 2018, was a great success. The events included: • Doo-Wop music of The Memory Makers who sang the hits of the 50s and 60s. Over 70 people attended. There was some dancing, a lot of refreshments and three raffles. • Curiously Creative Candles by Chrissy – 32 patrons attended and made great scented candles with many different designs. • The Haunted Tea attended by 40 patrons included special teas, tea sandwiches, and handmade scones. • Pumpkin decorating sessions for children and local teens included 70 families, 11 teens and 15 adults in the IGHL program attended. It was so much fun and everyone did a great job! Extra thanks to Margie DeCaro, Head of Children’s Services, and Librarians Laura Austin, Jessica Ceramello, and Caitlin Sprague for conducting this super fun activity. All the events were great and everyone had a fun time! [photos]
