Social Media Policy
The Center Moriches Free Public Library maintains a presence on social media sites, including but not limited to Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram and TikTok. Social media is any web-based tool or online application that establishes and promotes virtual interaction, communication, social connection, and community-based input through forms such as blogs, content sharing, online forums, or other digital channels. It is the library’s intention to utilize social media technologies in a manner that engages and enhances the library’s mission of informing, educating and involving its community.
Although comments and posts are welcome and encouraged on the library’s social media sites, the Library reserves the right to monitor and edit social media content on all Library accounts and to remove messages, tags or postings that contain the following:
- Obscene comments or hate speech
- Personal attacks, harassment, or threatening language
- Potential libelous statements
- Plagiarized or copyrighted material
- Commercial messages, spam, or advertisements
- Material that is deemed off-topic or inappropriate
- Private or personal information
- Falsification of identity
- Links to material not directly related to the discussion
- Any illegal activity
- Solicitation for donations, or memberships or services requiring a fee
- Promotional or oppositional posts related to political campaigning
- Information that may potentially compromise the safety or security of the public, public spaces, or public systems
- Content that promotes, fosters, or perpetuates discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, citizenship status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, religion, political ideology, veteran status, marital status, sensory, physical, or mental disability, or any other recognized characterization within federal or state law
- Photos or other images that may fall within any of the above categories
- Any material which is in violation of existing Library policies
The Library reserves the right to permanently block and/or restrict from sites person(s) who violate the guidelines of this policy.
In the event a user encounters harassment via a social media site, the user should file a complaint according to the reporting mechanisms established by that site.
The Library does not collect, maintain, or in any manner use personal information stored on any third-party site, other than to communicate with users and to share information regarding library business and operations. Third-party sites may possess their own privacy policies.
By commenting, posting, or sharing content, users agree to indemnify the Center Moriches Free Public Library and its representatives, including employees and the Board of Trustees, from and against all liabilities, damages, and/or costs incurred as a result of posted content.
