So Much to Explore! Discover Adventure at the Library.

The Children’s Room of the Center Moriches Library is a bustling hub of learning, play and activity. Our room is designed to include spaces for reading, playing, interacting and creating. Computers are available, along with centrally located seating for work and play. Our toddler play area features assorted imaginative toys, games and a play kitchen to explore and learn.

Below is a list of our myriad of amazing offerings.

  • Children get ready to read long before they start school. This is called early literacy. It is simply what children know about reading and writing before they can read or write. By reading aloud to your child, you can help them get ready to read! This is why we encourage you to enroll your child in our “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” Reading Initiative.

Check out our 1KBK Book Packs while you are here! We have over 100 thematic book packs for your family to read and enjoy! Each pack counts as one checkout and are available only to Center Moriches Library card holders.

  • Looking to find out more about the birds in your back yard? Want to learn some magic? Or maybe you are going on a trip and need some games to play in the car. Visit the Children’s Room to take a look at all of our themed backpacks. There are many fun and educational subjects to choose from. Each backpack includes themed books and a variety of games, manipulatives, DVD’s along with other resources. Ask a Children’s Librarian or search the catalog for more information!

  • Ever want to start a book club with friends or family? Our Booktalks in a Bag supply you with everything you need to do just that. The bags include 10 copies of the book and a resource folder with games, discussion questions, puzzles, activities and more! If available, there is also a copy of the audiobook and the movie! Great for scouting groups!

  • The Children’s Room offers a variety of multi-session programs that alternate throughout the year. Additionally, single session special programs are also offered. A flyer is available in the Children’s Room with current offerings. Please ask a Children’s Librarian if you need additional help or view the program calendar or learn more about the programs.

  • September through May, Elementary School aged children may come to the Children’s Department to sign up for our winter reading program, The Super Reader Challenge! This program runs during the school year up until May. Each month, there is a different challenge sheet available. Complete each challenge and return to the library for some fun surprises! See a librarian for more information!

  • Kids Summer Reading Club — COMING SUMMER 2022!

All you’ll need for a summer of reading fun is your library card! Younger children, aged birth through entering Kindergarten, will enjoy having stories read to them. Older children, entering grades 1st – 6th, will read independently (or with help) and earn special prizes. Kids and parents will be sure to enjoy the easy and fun features of the SRC app/online format.

Don’t fall victim to the dreaded SUMMER SLIDE!! According to Scholastic, research shows that some students forget some of what they’ve learned or slip out of practice during the summer months. But don’t panic! Reading just four books during the summer may keep a struggling reader from regressing. While you’re at it, why not earn some cool rewards just for reading? Join the Summer Reading Club for some fun activities and opportunities to win some prizes!

  • Launchpads are special tablets pre-loaded with content for kids designed with a simple, easy-to-use interface. Each age-specific tablet has a selection of games and activities in different subject areas with no download time and no need for WiFi. See a Children’s Librarian for more information or view a list of available Launchpads.

  • Did you know that we have so much more to offer you than just books? Come in and check out our Library of Things or view the list of available items.

  • Choosing a preschool or childcare center is a daunting task. The Childcare Council or Suffolk County is a great place to start. Please see our list to make the task a bit more manageable.

  • Endless opportunities for hands-on creativity and experimentation! Each kit contains all the tools and materials needed to experiment and create in many different subject areas. Kits stay in the library and you can use them inside the children’s department. Come to the Children’s Room to see all of the kits we have to offer.

  • This feature allows you to reserve and print passes from home. Museum passes may be reserved for the current or following month, subject to availability, and must be handled by an adult (18 years or older). Reserves can be taken online, at the Children’s Desk, or by phone.
