Children get ready to read long before they start school. This is called early literacy. It is simply what children know about reading and writing before they can read or write. By reading aloud to your child, you can help them get ready to read! This is why we encourage you to enroll your child in our “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” Reading Initiative.

Looking to find out more about the birds in your back yard? Want to learn some magic? Or maybe you are going on a trip and need some games to play in the car. Visit the Children’s Room to take a look at all of our themed backpacks. There are many fun and educational subjects to choose from. Each backpack includes themed books and a variety of games, manipulatives, DVD’s along with other resources. Ask a Children’s Librarian or search the catalog for more information!
Ever want to start a book club with friends or family? Our Booktalks in a Bag supply you with everything you need to do just that. The bags include 10 copies of the book and a resource folder with games, discussion questions, puzzles, activities and more! If available, there is also a copy of the audiobook and the movie! Great for scouting groups!

The Children’s Room offers a variety of multi-session programs that alternate throughout the year. Additionally, single session special programs are also offered. A flyer is available in the Children’s Room with current offerings. Please ask a Children’s Librarian if you need additional help or view the program calendar or learn more about the programs.

September through May, Elementary School aged children may come to the Children’s Department to sign up for our winter reading program, The Super Reader Challenge! This program runs during the school year up until May. Each month, there is a different challenge sheet available. Complete each challenge and return to the library for some fun surprises! Kids Summer Reading Club 2023!
All you’ll need for a summer of reading fun is your library card!
Children from birth – entering Kindergarten can share books to receive a special prizes.
Older children entering grades 1st – 6th will read independently (or with help) and earn a special prize after reading for 4 hours, 8 hours and 12 hours.
Reading Records must be recorded no later than Saturday, August 19th.
Launchpads are special tablets pre-loaded with content for kids designed with a simple, easy-to-use interface. Each age-specific tablet has a selection of games and activities in different subject areas with no download time and no need for WiFi. Choosing a preschool or childcare center is a daunting task. The Childcare Council or Suffolk County is a great place to start. Please see our list to make the task a bit more manageable.
Endless opportunities for hands-on creativity and experimentation! Each kit contains all the tools and materials needed to experiment and create in many different subject areas. Kits stay in the library and you can use them inside the children’s department. Come to the Children’s Room to see all of the kits we have to offer.
This feature allows you to reserve and print passes from home. Museum passes may be reserved for the current or following month, subject to availability, and must be handled by an adult (18 years or older). Reserves can be taken online, at the Children’s Desk, or by phone.
- The passes are available to CMFPL cardholders, 18 or older, in good standing (no fines, etc.)
- Passes are for one day only; the date of the patron’s visit is pre-printed on the pass
- There are no late fees or fines associated with Print on Demand passes
- The Library reserves the right to monitor usage to ensure fair access for the greatest number of patrons
Some passes are not Print-on-Demand eligible, and will require pickup/return at the Library.
The Parent’s Collection has information on many different aspects of child development and parenting. Some topics include pregnancy, sleeping, healthy eating, adolescence, and sexuality.
