Promoting Reading in Our Community

FOL Programs

Library Outreach Programs

Not every resident can frequent the library. FOL has two outreach programs that bring the library to the community. One is Library at the Laundromat. This program brings adult, teen, juvenile, and children’s books to an area laundromat. These books are circulated on a monthly basis. The second program is the Little Free Library at Kaler’s Pond. Since it has become very popular, we hope to place more stands throughout the neighborhood.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

The program goal is to read 1000 books before your child starts kindergarten. Prizes are sponsored in part by FOL to those who reach this goal.

Teen Movie/Pizza Night

The Young Adult Department offers teens a chance to view a popular film and socialize while they enjoy pizza and popcorn supplied courtesy of FOL. See the Library’s current newsletter for date and monthly movie title.

Knitting Circle

This informal library program takes place on the first Monday of each month at 6pm. Knitters and crocheters of all levels come together to work on their creations, socialize and just have fun. Refreshments are supplied courtesy of FOL.

FOL plants and maintains the various plants and flowers in the library’s west garden. Helping hands are always welcome for Spring and Fall cleanup.

Poetry & Prose Roundtable

Come and join this informal gathering for anyone interested in writing or listening to poetry, first Saturday of the every month, 12:30 pm-2:00 pm. All are welcome!

Monday Afternoon at the Library

FOL sponsors games in the library’s Community Room each Monday, 1:30 pm until 4:30 pm. Enjoy a friendly game of Mah Jongg, Scrabble, cards and other table-top games along with great conversation.

Special Events

Pop-up-Book Sale

Due to COVID-19, the September in-library book sale has been cancelled.

But you can join us at our Pop-Up-Book-Sales.  In front of the library, under the canopy.  All books are 25¢ each.

Saturday, September 12, 10 am to 3 pm

All proceeds from FOL book sales directly support the Center Moriches Free Public Library.  Funds raised go toward beneficail library programs, events, and enhancements to library equipment and provisions that greatly benefit the patrons, community, and staff.

If you weren’t able to come to the book sale or passed up a book or two that you wished you could have purchased, please visit our thrift shelves which are open year round.

The book sales are staffed entirely by volunteers from the FOL. Perhaps you might like to help by volunteering. Come join us anytime!

Friends of the Library Week – October 18 to 24, 2020

Even with social distancing in place, FOL will still be providing programs for FOL week.  FOL will be sponsoring Maryanne M’s Jar Candle Holder and Charms Class, and pumpkin decorating for children, teens and adults.  Please check the library newsletter and website for event dates, when to register, and any additional information you may need.

Food Drive on Shredding Day – October 24, 2020

The library will be sponsoring the shredding truck on Saturday, October 24, 2020 in the library parking lot between 9am and 12pm.  During that event, FOL will be collecting all non-perishable food or toiletry items which will then be donated to food pantries in our area.  When you bring in your items to be shredded, please remember to bring in a food pantry donation as well.  Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Friends of the Library Week 2019

We had a great turnout for all our programs during FOL week (October 21 to 27). Bracelet making was on Monday and Wednesday. A total of 60 patrons took advantage of the classes. On Friday and Saturday, pumpkins were painted by 40 IGHL members, 75 children, and 20 young adults. It was so much fun and everyone did a great job! The Haunted Tea on Saturday was enjoyed by 42 patrons. We gave out a variety of tea bags in a Halloween bag as parting gifts, plus we raffled off the 10 donated plants that were the table decorations. On Sunday the concert given by The Traditions Musical Group was a great finale to FOL week. Even though the weather was uncooperative, we had a total of 48 patrons. The singing was great, the refreshments were enjoyed, and we concluded with raffles of Lotto tickets and floral arrangements. Friends of the Library Week was a huge success and a great way to say Thank You to the library patrons!! [photos]
